Excavations
The Archaeological Site L’Esquerda is known since a long time ago in the Osona region. In the first years of the 20th Century, various soil pits were conducted, mostly in the surroundings of the Church.
Since 1977, a team from the University of Barcelona led and run the annual systematic archaeological excavations. L’Esquerda Foundation in 2018 began with the responsibility of writing the research project that allows the scheduled excavation campaigns to be carried out at the Site. 'L’ESQUERDA: STRATEGIC SPOTS OVER TER RIVER FROM PREHISTORY TO THE MIDDLE AGES' is the title for the four-year project that runs from 2018 to 2021.
Currently, in L’Esquerda, there are two annual running campaigns. The first one is during the last week of June and the first days of July, which is a practical subject from the University of Barcelona: Internship I and II of the Archaeology degree. The second one is during the last weeks of August. It counts with mandatory permission of the Archaeological Service of the Government of Catalonia. The Ministry of Culture of the Government of Catalonia, with the collaboration of Roda de Ter Town Council, Les Masies de Roda Town Council, other Town Councils, and other organizations subsidize the excavations.
Excavations are organized in two groups of 15 persons each: one group excavates the Iberian area and the other on the mediaeval area. For both groups, methodology and excavation system work the same way, so they work equally in the different areas of the Site. The people that participate in the excavations are students or graduates in Archaeology and History, from all the universities around the country, although there are also specialists in other subjects, given the interdisciplinary nature of the method followed.
Once the excavations are completed, during the following year people work voluntarily in the Site workshop-laboratory, to study, inventory, and catalogue all the material, and elaborate informs and excavation reports that are delivered to the Government of Catalonia.
Excavation dates: 2nd fortnight of August
Pre-registration: April-May. Limited vacancies.
Admissions: according to curriculum, preferably university students and/or archaeology and history graduates.
